Beschreibung
Nephrit ist der zweite Stein (neben Jadeit), der unter dem Oberbegriff Jade im Handel ist. Erst seit 1863 ist bekannt, daß unter Jade zwei sehr ähnliche Mineralien verbreitet sind. Der Name Nephrit stammt von dem griech. Wort "nephron" für "Niere", weil man diesen Stein traditionell als Amulett gegen Nierenkrankheiten nutzte. Die Spanier nennen ihn Nierenstein ("piedra de los rinones"). Die Maori in Neuseeland haben Nephrit lange Zeit zur Waffenherstellung und Zauberei benutzt. In China wird Jade schon seit Urzeiten als "Stein des Himmels" verehrt. Konfuzius erkennt in Jade die Gerechtigkeit, denn "seine Kanten sind scharf, aber sie schneiden nicht" ( 47). Nephrit kommt in Grün und vielen anderen Farben vor. Die Chinesen haben haben für jede Farb-Varietät einen anderen Namen. Seine farbgebenden Substanzen sind Eisen, Kalcium und Magnesium.
