Beschreibung
Der Amethyst ist der beliebteste Stein der Quarz-Gruppe. Sein Name kommt aus dem Griechischen und bedeutet soviel wie "nicht trunken", was sich auf seine Schutzwirkung vor Trunkenheit bezieht, die man ihm nachgesagt hat. Früher war der Amethyst ein teuerer Stein. Durch sein häufiges Vorkommen ist er trotz seiner hohen Qualität heute sehr preiswert. Besonders schöne Steine, in dunklem, gleichmäßig verteilten Violett, werden auch heute noch zu Schmuckzwecken geschliffen. Durch Erwärmung kann die Farbe weniger schöne Steine verbessert werden - oder sich in gelb, braun oder blau ändern. Besonders beliebt sind auch Amethyst - Kristalldrusen(*). Neben ihrer dekorativen Wirkung werden sie zum Reinigen von Steinen verwendet. Seine farbgebende Substanz ist haupsächlich Eisen, sowie Mangan und Titan.
