Ebenso wie sein Namensvetter, der
Aventurin aus der Quarz-Gruppe, hat der Aventurin-Feldspat seinen Namen von seiner Ähnlichkeit mit der durch Zufall (ital. "a ventura") um 1700 entdeckten Glassorte.
Typisch ist sein rotes, manchmal grünes oder blaues Glitzern, das durch Einschlüsse von Hämatit und Lepidokrit entsteht.
Die Kurzform Aventurin (manchmal auch "Avanturin") darf nur für den Aventurin-Quarz, nicht für den Aventurin-Feldspat, verwendet werden. Im Handel ist der Aventurin-Feldspat hauptsächlich unter dem Namen "Sonnenstein" verbreitet.
